What is Motogymkhana: a complete beginner's guide

Cones, tarmac and seconds. Why is this sport from Japan the best school for a city rider?

What is Motogymkhana: a complete beginner's guide

Motogymkhana is a motorcycle sport in which you ride a cone course in the shortest possible time. It was born in Japan and has since spread from Europe to Asia.

How does it work?

Cones are laid out on flat tarmac in a set pattern. The rider learns the course beforehand, then rides it against the clock. Touching a cone adds a penalty second. No special motorcycle is needed — an ordinary road bike is enough.

Core elements

  • Figure 8 — continuous turns around two cones.
  • Slalom — rhythmic weaving through a line of cones.
  • 180° and 360° turns — a tight U-turn and a full circle.

Why is it useful?

The hardest moments in everyday riding happen at low speed: a tight turn, a sudden stop, an obstacle. Motogymkhana systematically develops exactly these skills — throttle control, braking, balance and vision.

How to start?

The best way is with a coach. Bad habits form fast and are hard to fix later. MotoRider Academy has a program for every level, from complete beginners to riders preparing for competition.
